“Yûta Shimotsu creates an incredible, unpredictable body horror masterpiece that doubles as an indicting satire of Japan’s society...It’s a modern J-horror masterpiece.” – Bloody Disgusting
Director Yuta Shimotsu, whose debut Best Wishes to All (2023) announced a filmmaker with something urgent to say, doubles down on his satirical instincts and horror craft in New Group.
Quietly anxious Ai (Anna Yamada) begins to notice something wrong at her ultra-conservative, soul-crushing high school. One day, a student crouches motionless on the soccer field for no reason. The next day, two more join him. Within days, the school administration is forcing every student to join the growing, grotesque formation – and violently punishing those who refuse. Ai and new transfer student Yu, who has lived abroad, scramble to resist being swallowed by the new order.
An audacious commentary on fascism and conformity, New Group takes audiences on a journey from darkly comic to sheer, unadulterated horror.
