The Weed Eaters

The Weed Eaters

Victorian Premiere

“Everyone needs to see The Weed Eaters…the most fun I’ve had at the movies in a long time…has cemented itself as my favourite local film in recent memory.” – The Spinoff

This killer Aotearoa-made stoner-horror-comedy hybrid from Causeway Films (Talk to MeThe Babadook) follows in the grand tradition of Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste and Jonathan King’s Black Sheep to deliver a distinctively Kiwi strain of deadpan comedy, giddy gore and great genre filmmaking.

Jules (Alice May Connolly) is on a New Year's Eve trip with her new boyfriend and his two stoner friends in the wops of North Canterbury when they stumble across a long-abandoned stash in an old shed. After a quick session, and an accidental death, the marijuana turns them into enthusiastic cannibals. In the wake of their man-eating munchies, they're left with one option to hide their crimes - keep toking and devour the evidence.

Shot on a deceptively low budget – with the cast doubling as cinematographers, caterers and production designers – and packing a wallop in its lean 80 minutes, this debut feature from Callum Devin also features a charming indie soundtrack, appearances from NZ legends Paul Kean (The Bats), Delaney Davidson and comedian David Correos, and a poker-faced portrait of millennial friendships that’s as squeamish as its blood-and-guts.
